A fixture full of emotions in Latin American Football
This Latin American Football week had some electrifying and very exciting matches. We’ve seen new matches of the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, the two most prestigious tournaments on the continent, were played.
In addition, we will also review the latest news from the best leagues in Latin America, with special emphasis on the tournaments in Brazil and Argentina, which are very close at the top.
Copa Libertadores Matches.

Brazilians with steady progress in Copa Libertadores.
Fluminense, Atlético Mineiro, Botafogo, Sao Paulo and Flamengo will compete in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores. Five of the eight teams in the tournament are Brazilian, demonstrating the superiority of ‘Carioca’ football on the continent in recent years.
Fluminense made it into the top 8 in Latin American Football after defeating Gremio on penalties with a goal made by legendary center-back, Thiago Silva.
On the other hand, Botafogo knocked Palmeiras out of the tournament with a spectacular performance by Venezuelan Jefferson Savarino, with a goal and an assist.
River, Colo Colo and Peñarol will fight to avoid the Brazilian monopoly in this edition of Latin American Football’s most important tournament.

- Corinthians 1 (5) – 2 (4) Bragantino. Corinthians advances on penalties with a 2-2 aggregate score.
- Fortaleza 3 – 1 Rosario Central. Fortaleza advances with a 4-2 aggregate score.
- Lanús 3 – 1 LDU Quito. – Lanús advances with a 5-2 aggregate score.
- Medellin 4 – 0 Palestino. Medellín advances with a 6-2 aggregate score.
- Belgrano 0 – 2 Paranaense. Paranaense advances with a 1-4 aggregate score.
- Sportivo Ameliano 0 (3) – 0 (4) Libertad. Libertad advances on penalty kicks with 1-1 on aggregate.
- Cruzeiro 2 (5) – 1 (4) Boca Juniors. Cruzeiro advances on penalties with a 2-2 aggregate score.
Boca out after unbelievable mistake by Advíncula.
The most eye-catching match of this Copa Sudamericana matchday was between Boca Juniors of Argentina and Cruzeiro of Brazil.
The Argentinians were the favorites to advance to the next round. However, a rare mistake by right back Luis Advíncula put an end to the team’s plan for the match.
Only 12 seconds into the match, Advíncula committed a very aggressive foul against Lucas Romero.
The referee, Wilmar Roldán, sent off the Peruvian fullback and left Boca Juniors with a player less for practically the entire match.
Despite the sending-off, Boca had chances to take the lead, but mistakes like Zenon’s prevented them from going through.
In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Cássio was the hero for Cruzeiro. Once again, the Argentines disappointed in an international tournament and the presidency of Juan Román Riquelme is already being questioned by the fans.

Lanús (ARG) vs Medellín (COL).
Libertad (PAR) vs Cruzeiro (BRA).
Paranaense (BRA) vs Racing (ARG).
River and Fortaleza on top of the Argentina and Brazil leagues.
The domestic tournaments in Brazil and Argentina are having a great parity in recent months.
River Plate is looking for a new league championship and remains above Argentinos Jrs. by one point in the lead, pending their result against San Lorenzo.
With Miguel Borja as scorer, Marcelo Gallardo’s team seeks to restore the hegemony it exercised in Argentine soccer during his first cycle at the club.
On the other hand, the Brasileirao is being surprisingly led by Fortaleza. Juan Martín Lucero is the team’s offensive bastion with eight goals in the tournament.
In this week’s matchday, Fortaleza defeated Corinthians 1-0 with a goal by Yago Pikachu, staying one point ahead of Botafogo and with a game in hand over ‘Fogao’ squad.

Jefferson Savarino – Botafogo.
This week’s gold medal goes to Jefferson Savarino. The Venezuelan striker was essential in helping Botafogo advance to the next round of the Copa Libertadores by eliminating Palmeiras.
Savarino managed to assist Igor Jesus in the team’s first goal. Subsequently, he scored the second goal with a powerful shot to the goal after a counterattack.
The player who was previously with Real Salt Lake of MLS is at the best level of his career and is one of the best players in South America at the moment.
