A Guide to the 2024/2025 UEFA Women’s Champions League

The 2024/25 UEFA Women’s Champions League season kicks off on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, continuing its tradition as Europe’s premier women’s football competition. It is the 24th edition, with the finals taking place at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal, on May 25, 2025.

16 teams will be competing in the group stage, and this season promises many high-level matches and excitement.

Overview

The UEFA Women’s Champions League, organized by UEFA, is the premier competition for women’s club football in Europe. Established in 2001 as the UEFA Women’s Cup, it was renamed in 2009 to align more closely with the men’s competition. The tournament has grown significantly, now featuring 72 teams in total, with 16 teams competing in the group stage.

The competition has evolved over the years, with key changes like the introduction of runners-up from top leagues and a one-off final. The 2021–22 season marked the introduction of a group stage in the modern era, mirroring the men’s Champions League format. Lyon remains the most successful club with eight titles, while Barcelona are the reigning champions, having won in 2024.

Each season, the tournament involves two qualification paths, with teams progressing through group stages, quarterfinals, and beyond, culminating in a final that decides Europe’s best women’s club team.

Change of Format from 2025/2026

It should be noted that this will be the last season in the current format. Starting with the 2025/2026 season, the UEFA Women’s Champions League will undergo another significant format change. The tournament will expand to offer even more opportunities for competitive matches, aiming to enhance the visibility and growth of women’s football across Europe.

The key changes include:

  1. Expanded Group Stage: The group stage will likely increase from the current 16 teams to accommodate more clubs, allowing greater representation from UEFA’s member associations.
  2. Two European Competitions: There are discussions about introducing two new women’s European competitions, similar to the men’s UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League. This would give more clubs, especially from smaller nations, a chance to compete at a European level, providing increased match exposure and experience.
  3. Qualification and Entry Adjustments: The qualification process may be refined, with more direct entries for champions from top leagues and a more comprehensive qualification pathway for runners-up and lower-ranked clubs, following the principles of fairness and expanding opportunities.

Favourites

Barcelona Femeni – Current Champions, won 3 of the last 4 titles and are the favourites to win their 4th title. They open their campaign with a difficult away match against Manchester City, who won their last encounter 2-1 in 2021. With the likes of Aitana Bonmatí, Alexia Putellas, and Salma Paralluelo in their ranks, Barcelona Femeni would surely be the team to beat.

Olympique Lyon Féminin – Last year’s losing finalist, Lyon remains the most successful team in this competition and the 2022 champions. Lyon has developed a reputation as the Real Madrid of women’s football. An ever-present force in this competition, they will be looking to add a 9th title to their haul this season. A major challenge is the loss of their talismanic manager, Sonia Bompastor, to Chelsea.

Chelsea Women – England’s recently most dominant team and 2021 finalists, the Champions League remains a holy grail for them. They have replaced their most successful manager, Emma Hayes, with Sonia Bompastor, who won the Champions League in 2022 with Lyon. Will this be their season? It remains to be seen!

Pre-Match Analysis: Aston Villa vs Manchester United

The clash between Aston Villa and Manchester United promises to be exciting, as two teams with contrasting fortunes this season battle it out. Aston Villa made headlines on Wednesday by defeating six-time European champions Bayern Munich 1-0 in their first home match of the UCL era. Manchester United, on the other hand, earned a last-minute 3-3 draw away to Porto after initially bottling a 2-0 lead in the first half against the Portuguese side. The upcoming league match between Aston Villa and Manchester United is set to be held at Villa Park, the home of Aston Villa, on Sunday, 6th October at 14:00 GMT.

Current League Form & Performance

  • Aston Villa:

o Points: 13/18

o Goals Scored: 12

o Goals Conceded: 9

Aston Villa have continued from where they left off last season, winning four games, drawing once, and suffering one defeat against Arsenal (6W, 1D, 1L). Their goal-scoring prowess is evident, netting 12 goals across six matches, averaging 2 goals per game. Rising star Jhon Durán has eased the goal-scoring burden on Ollie Watkins, scoring 4 goals, all of which came from the bench. Defensively, Aston Villa look vulnerable, having conceded 9 goals in 6 games, averaging 1.5 goals conceded per game. Although they have defensive concerns, the fluidity of their attack makes Aston Villa a formidable opponent.

  • Manchester United:

o Points: 7/18

o Goals Scored: 5

o Goals Conceded: 8

Manchester United’s start to the season has been worrisome for fans, as they sit 13th in the league (2W, 1D, 3L) and six points behind their opponents Aston Villa. They have scored a meager 5 goals in 6 matches, highlighting their blunt attack. They have also conceded 8 goals, pointing to continued vulnerabilities in their defense, as seen last season. Their defensive frailties could be exploited by Aston Villa’s sharp attack, but you never know which version of Erik Ten Hag’s team will show up on match day and this unpredictability makes them a dangerous team.

Head-to-Head Stats (Last 5 Encounters)

  • Aston Villa Wins: 1
  • Manchester United Wins: 4
  • Draws: 0
  • Goals Scored by Aston Villa: 8
  • Goals Scored by Man United: 11

The head-to-head record between these two teams favors Manchester United, with Ten Hag’s men winning 4 out of 5 of their recent meetings (4W, 1L). Neither team has played to a draw in any of their last 5 encounters. Manchester United has scored 11 goals, while Villa has only managed to score 8, and only one of these 5 encounters ended with fewer than 3 goals or without both teams scoring. This shows that these matches are typically high-scoring affairs, suggesting that the upcoming game will be competitive, with neither side holding a clear a clear psychological advantage.

Implications of Current Form and Stats

  • Aston Villa: Villa enters this match on the back of an impressive UCL outing against European giants Bayern Munich. This implies that the team will be brimming with confidence, especially given their lethal attack and strong start to the campaign. In fact, the only loss Emery’s men have suffered this season in all competitions was to the equally impressive Arsenal. They will likely press high, control possession, and seek to exploit Manchester United’s defensive weaknesses.
  • Manchester United: Not the kind of start Erik Ten Hag and United fans would have been hoping for, as United’s defensive record (8 goals conceded) remains unresolved from last season, despite adding 3 new defenders and a defensive midfielder to their ranks. This may pose a problem against Villa’s attacking firepower. United’s attacking form is also poor, having scored only 5 goals in 6 games—only Southampton has a worse scoring record in the league this campaign. However, they did score 3 goals on Thursday in their 3-3 draw away to Porto, with the equalizing goal coming after Bruno Fernandes was sent off. This should give them some form of confidence boost heading into this encounter.

Prediction

Considering the current form and head-to-head statistics, it’s reasonable to predict a high-scoring match with both teams likely to score. Here’s a safe prediction:

  • Both Teams to Score: Aston Villa and Manchester United are both suspect at the back, having conceded 9 and 8 goals respectively. Their defensive form suggests that both teams are likely to score.
  • Over 1.5 Goals: Given the attacking form of Aston Villa, it is unlikely that they will score less than two goals. With Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran, they have two of Europe’s hottest strikers in their ranks. Additionally, considering the defensive frailties of both teams, there is a high probability that the match will produce at least two goals.

This fixture is set to be an exciting, end-to-end contest between two teams with strong attacking abilities, and a high-scoring match seems inevitable.

2024/25 UEFA Champions League: Top Matches of Matchday 2

The 2024/25 UEFA Champions League continues on Matchday 2 with some intriguing games to look forward to. As Europe’s top clubs continue their quest for supremacy in the group stages, here are some key fixtures to look out for on Matchday 2.

Arsenal vs PSG (October 1, 2024)

A mouth-watering clash between two European heavyweights. Both teams, who have never won Europe’s most prestigious competition, will be eager to give a good account of themselves and send warnings to other top European clubs about their intentions. The clash at the Emirates gives Arsenal the opportunity to extend their unbeaten run at home in all competitions to 15 since January 2024 (W12, D2), following a 0-0 result against Atalanta in the first match of the group stage. Mikel Arteta knows he needs all three points if his side is to qualify as one of the top eight teams from the group stage.

On the other hand, PSG are a formidable opponent, unbeaten so far this season and coming off a late win over Girona in the first round of matches. Luis Enrique’s team will be hoping to make it two wins in two in the group stage. A major cause for concern for Enrique is the fact that PSG have never won against Arsenal in four attempts; they have drawn three and lost once, making it the worst head-to-head record they have against any European opposition. Enrique will be hoping his men can breach Arsenal’s tight defense, which has conceded two goals in each of their last two league games.

Key Players: Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice (Arsenal); Ousmane Dembélé, Nuno Mendes (PSG)

Bayer Leverkusen vs AC Milan (October 1, 2024)

Bayer Leverkusen hosts AC Milan in one of the most exciting contests of Matchday 2 in the UEFA Champions League. Bayer under Xabi Alonso, have continued from where they left off last season, scoring last-minute winners and displaying a never-say-die attitude. Bayer started this year’s campaign with an impressive 4-0 win over Feyenoord and will be looking to build on that performance against AC Milan. However, a major concern for Alonso’s side is that they have been winless at home in five attempts against Italian opponents (D3, L2). Coupled with the fact that they lost last year’s Europa League finals to Atalanta another Italian team, Alonso will surely be eager to get the three points in this encounter.

AC Milan, who fell to Liverpool 3-1 in the opening encounter of the UCL, will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways. A trip to Germany is never easy and Milan under Paulo Fonseca, have been unpredictable this season. However, the Rossoneri come into this on the back of two impressive domestic performances after seeing off arch-rivals Inter Milan and Lecce with ease. They will be hoping to extend their impressive run on German soil, remaining unbeaten in seven away matches against German sides since 2002 (W4, D3).

Key Players: Florian Wirtz, Robert Andrich (Bayer Leverkusen); Christian Pulisic, Rafael Leao (AC Milan)

PSV vs Sporting CP (October 1, 2024)

Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven were thumped 3-1 by Juventus in the first round of matches and they will be out to pick their first points of the campaign if they are to qualify for the next round of the competition. Hosting Sporting at home, Peter Bosz’s men will be hoping to continue their good form at home in the competition, going ten games unbeaten at home in Europe (W6, D4). They also have a good recent head-to-head record against Portuguese opponents at home (W2, D2). This encounter should give them a perfect opportunity to get three points and kick off their campaign.

Rúben Amorim’s Sporting won their first match of the UCL campaign 2-0 against Lille and will be hoping to continue their winning streak of eight games in all competitions this season. With Arsenal and Manchester City still to play in their UCL fixtures, Sporting knows that a result here away to PSV will be crucial to their chances of qualifying from the group stage this season.

Key Players: Ricardo Pepi, Guus Til (PSV); Viktor Gyökeres, Geny Catamo (Sporting CP)

Aston Villa vs Bayern Munich (October 2, 2024)

Aston Villa welcomes six-time European champions Bayern Munich in their first-ever UCL home game and it’s a game most fans will be relishing. Unai Emery’s men are looking very formidable and have continued where they left off last season. Bayern, as tough as they come, gives Emery an opportunity to see if his men can match up with one of the best European teams. Villa comes into this game on an impressive run of form (W6, D1), winning six of their opening eight games in all competitions, drawing newly promoted Ipswich 2-2 on Sunday and losing just once, which was a 2-0 defeat against Arsenal. The one-time European champions also won their first group stage encounter, winning 3-0 against Young Boys.

Bayern Munich, on the other hand, have started brilliantly under new manager Vincent Kompany, who is no stranger to English football. Coming off an impressive display in the 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern will be looking to lay down a marker here and make their intentions known that they will be one of the major challengers to Real Madrid’s crown. They come into this encounter on the back of a record-breaking Matchday 1 victory, where they thumped Dinamo Zagreb 9-2, becoming the first team to score nine goals in a single encounter in the UCL.

Key Players: Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa); Michael Olise, Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)

RB Leipzig vs Juventus (October 2, 2024)

Leipzig returns to the Champions League with a challenging home fixture against Juventus. Marco Rose’s side has been in poor form lately, with only the 4-0 win over Augsburg on Sunday in their Bundesliga match being their only win in four games in all competitions (D2, L1). They also lost 2-1 to Atlético Madrid in their UCL opener. However, Leipzig is unbeaten in their last nine home games in 2024 in all competitions (W6, D3) and are yet to concede a goal at home this season.

Juventus will look to break Leipzig’s impressive home form, coming off a 3-0 win over Genoa on Saturday in Serie A after three consecutive domestic draws. Juventus remains the only European side in the top five leagues yet to concede a goal in the league this season and they remain unbeaten across all competitions this season. They won their UCL opener 3-1 against PSV. One concern for Thiago Motta is Juventus’s inability to win away in the UCL in their last five encounters (D1, L4). Their defensive dominance might come in handy in this encounter and if they are to take anything away from this game, they will need to be at their best.

Key Players: Loïs Openda, Benjamin Šeško (RB Leipzig); Dušan Vlahović, Kenan Yildiz (Juventus)

Benfica vs Atletico Madrid (October 2, 2024)

Benfica enters this encounter on the back of an impressive run of form, a four-game winning streak that includes their UCL opening game 2-1 win against Red Star Belgrade. Bruno Lage’s men will be hoping to secure only the club’s third win in 21 attempts against Spanish opposition, a dire statistic (D8, L11). Another cause for concern is that they are winless at home in their last four UCL encounters (D1, L3). If they are to take all three points in this encounter, they will have to be at their absolute best and will be counting on their red-hot Turkish winger Kerem Aktürkoğlu to produce some magic.

Diego Simeone’s men will be relishing this encounter, having started this season unbeaten in all competitions (W5, D4). The last-minute equalizer on Sunday against arch-rivals Real Madrid in the Madrid derby will also boost their confidence. They have a knack for scoring late goals this season; however, Simeone will be aware of his team’s poor form away in the UCL. They have only one win in their last nine away matches (D2, L6). However, if there’s any place they can get an away win, it’s in Portugal. They have won three of their last four visits with only one defeat against Porto.

Key Players: Kerem Aktürkoğlu, Ángel Di María (Benfica); Antoine Griezmann, Conor Gallagher (Atletico Madrid)

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal: Are They the Real Deal?

The clash against Manchester City felt like a defining moment. It wasn’t just a routine match; it was a statement of intent. Coming into the home of the Premier League’s most dominant force over the last decade and nearly walking away with all three points showed that this Arsenal team has evolved.

The way Arsenal responded to going a goal down early in the match was telling. Erling Haaland, the most fearsome striker in Europe, struck in the 9th minute to put City ahead. At that moment, you’d be forgiven for expecting Arsenal to crumble under the weight of City’s firepower. But instead, they stood tall. New signing Riccardo Calafiori made his Premier League debut in style, curling in a sensational left-footed strike to level the score. Gabriel Magalhães then rose highest to head in Bukayo Saka’s corner, sending shockwaves through the Etihad as the Gunners took a 2-1 lead.

For a team that’s often criticized for lacking resilience, this felt different. Arsenal weren’t just hanging on; they were fighting. Unfortunately, John Stones’ 98th-minute equalizer denied them a famous victory, but even then, it was clear that Pep Guardiola and his City team had been pushed to their limits.

Consistent Performances in the Premier League

It’s not just this one result that hints at Arsenal’s growth. Their Premier League form this season has been impressive. They’ve faced tough away fixtures already and come out unscathed. A gritty 2-0 win over Wolves on the opening day, followed by a controlled 2-0 victory against Aston Villa who they failed to beat last season, laid the foundation. Even when they faced setbacks, such as the 1-1 draw against Brighton, the Gunners displayed the resilience to bounce back, securing a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby – a game that would have unsettled previous Arsenal sides.

This consistency, especially in high-pressure matches, is exactly what separates title contenders from pretenders. Arsenal’s performances suggest that they have the mental strength and tactical discipline to maintain their form across the long, grueling Premier League season.

Manchester City Look Ordinary Without Rodri and De Bruyne

One of the major talking points of this season is how Manchester City looks without their midfield maestro, Rodri, and the ever-influential Kevin De Bruyne. With De Bruyne sidelined by injury since the opening game of the season, City have struggled to maintain their usual fluidity in attack. The absence of Rodri for the larger part of the game, due to injury he sustained earlier in the match against Arsenal was equally telling, with the City midfield lacking its usual steel and organization.

Rodri is not just City’s best defensive midfielder; he is the glue that binds their entire team together. Without him, the cracks in Guardiola’s system were glaringly obvious. Arsenal exploited this weakness, dominating large portions of the match and exposing City’s vulnerability without their midfield enforcer.

Manchester City, for all their strength and squad depth, may not be as invincible as they seem. A long-term injury to Rodri, De Bruyne, or even Erling Haaland could seriously derail their season. The champions rely heavily on these three players and if they were to lose them for an extended period, it’s not hard to imagine City struggling to maintain their momentum.

Reminiscent of Chelsea’s 2004/05 Defensive Resilience

If you’re looking for a team from the past to compare this Arsenal side to, the most fitting comparison might be Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea of the 2004/05 season. That Chelsea team was renowned for being incredibly tough to break down, boasting a resolute defense that conceded just 15 goals all season – a Premier League record.

Similarly, Arteta’s Arsenal have shown an ability to shut up shop and defend as a unit. With William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães forming a formidable partnership at the back, and Riccardo Calafiori bringing extra quality to the defense, Arsenal have become difficult to break down. They’ve added steel and determination that fans haven’t seen in years. This isn’t the Arsenal of old that would crumble under pressure; this team thrives on it.

Like Mourinho’s Chelsea, Arteta’s side is willing to do the dirty work – they’re organized, disciplined and more than capable of grinding out results when necessary. They’ve already kept several clean sheets this season and their ability to see out games is becoming a defining characteristic. It’s a far cry from the Arsenal sides of the past that would fall apart when put under pressure.

Disciplinary Issues: Cause for Concern?

Arsenal’s newfound toughness has come with a price: a growing disciplinary record. It’s a double-edged sword.  While it shows their willingness to battle, it’s also a potential Achilles’ heel. The match against Manchester City saw Leandro Trossard receive a red card for a second yellow after kicking the ball away. This mirrored the incident involving Declan Rice just a few weeks earlier against Brighton, where he was also sent off for a similar offense. These red cards were a result of ill-discipline rather than reckless tackles, but they highlight a worrying trend.

Since Arteta took charge in December 2019, Arsenal have received 17 red cards, more than any other team in the Premier League during that period. While Arteta’s Arsenal is tougher, they’ll need to learn to manage that aggression, especially in high-stakes games. Losing key players to needless suspensions could prove costly in their quest for the title.

Arteta’s Arsenal: Tougher, Smarter, Hungrier

One of the most noticeable changes in Arteta’s Arsenal is the added steel and toughness. Gone are the days when teams could bully the Gunners into submission. Now, they’re the ones dishing out the physicality, as Kai Havertz demonstrated by body-checking Rodri just five seconds into the match. Arsenal no longer plays with just flair and finesse; they have an edge, a nastiness and a willingness to scrap for every inch.

The defensive duo of Gabriel and Saliba looks formidable, add that with a cast of Ben White, Justin Timber and Calafiori they are arguably the defence in the league. They’re streetwise, they’re resilient and they’re not afraid to get stuck in. It’s precisely the mentality shift Arsenal needed to compete with Manchester City over a 38-game season.

A New-Found Threat from Set Pieces

Another key element in Arsenal’s evolution is their threat from dead-ball situations. Last season, they led the league with 22 goals from set pieces, and this campaign appears to be no different. Gabriel Magalhães is proving to be a menace in the air, having scored 14 out of his 16 Premier League goals from corners. His header against City was yet another example of how Arsenal is becoming a more complete team, capable of scoring in a variety of ways.

Can They Sustain This Momentum?

So, are Arsenal the real deal? It’s still early in the season, but the signs are encouraging. They’ve navigated tricky away fixtures at Aston Villa, Tottenham, and Manchester City, coming away with two wins and a hard-fought draw. This is the kind of form that builds belief and momentum. The only question is whether they can sustain it over the grueling winter months when the games come thick and fast.

2024/25 UEFA Champions League: Top Matches of Matchday 1

The 2024/25 UEFA Champions League kicks off with some intriguing games as Europe’s top clubs aim for dominance in the group stages. With a new format in place, here are some key fixtures to look out for on Matchday 1.

Juventus vs PSV (September 17, 2024)

After a year-long absence from European football due to financial regulation violations, Juventus returns to the UEFA Champions League in a clash against PSV Eindhoven at the Allianz Stadium. Shockingly this historic fixture will be their first-ever head-to-head meeting, despite both clubs’ illustrious European pasts. Juventus with a solid defensive record under Thiago Motta, will look to continue their unbeaten run after starting the season strongly.

On the other hand, PSV is on fire having won their last five matches while scoring 20 goals. However, this trip to Turin presents a significant step up in competition for Peter Bosz’s men. PSV has had limited success in Italy and will need a strong performance to avoid leaving empty-handed.

Key Players: Dusan Vlahovic, Samuel Mbangula (Juventus); Johan Bakayoko, Luuk de Jong (PSV)

AC Milan vs Liverpool (September 17, 2024)

AC Milan takes on Liverpool in what promises to be one of the biggest games of the opening round. Milan under Paulo Fonseca, has been unpredictable this season but comes into the match after a comfortable win over Venezia. Tammy Abraham and Rafael Leão will be key in breaking down a resilient Liverpool defense.

Liverpool, who recently suffered an upset defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, will be eager to get back on track in Europe. Under Arne Slot, the Reds have a potent attacking setup, spearheaded by Mohamed Salah which could cause Milan serious trouble.

Key Players: Rafael Leão, Tammy Abraham (AC Milan); Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

PSG vs Girona (September 18, 2024)

Paris Saint-Germain hosts Girona in what looks to be an exciting matchup at Parc des Princes. With Kylian Mbappé gone, PSG has turned to Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola to lead their attack. Despite some key departures, Luis Enrique’s side has adapted well and will look to keep their momentum after a solid victory in Ligue 1.

Girona are playing in the Champions League for the first time after exceeded expectations in La Liga. After thrashing Osasuna 4-0, they will arrive in Paris with confidence. PSG may be favorites, but Girona’s disciplined defense and quick transitions could make this game closer than expected.

Key Players: Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola (PSG); Abel Ruiz, Arnau Martínez (Girona)

Atletico Madrid vs RB Leipzig (September 19, 2024)

Atletico Madrid and RB Leipzig face off in a classic clash of styles. Diego Simeone’s Atletico will bring their trademark defensive solidity and efficient counter-attacks, looking to stifle Leipzig’s aggressive pressing game. Atletico’s experience in these situations could be a key factor.

Marco Rose led Leipzig, plays a fast-paced, high-energy brand of football. Despite some high-profile departures, they remain a competitive side especially in the Bundesliga.

Key Players: Antoine Griezmann, Conor Gallagher (Atletico Madrid); Lois Openda, Benjamin Sesko (RB Leipzig)

Manchester City vs Inter Milan (September 18, 2024)

A repeat of the 2023 Champions League final sees Manchester City and Inter Milan square off once again. City under Pep Guardiola, has been in fine form and remains the team to beat in Europe. Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne will look to dominate proceedings as City controls possession.

Inter Milan led by Simone Inzaghi, may not be as consistent this season but remains dangerous on the counter-attack. Lautaro Martínez is in excellent form and will be Inter’s main threat as they aim to upset City at the Etihad.

Key Players: Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City); Lautaro Martínez, Marcus Thuram (Inter Milan)

Atalanta vs Arsenal  (September 19, 2024)

Arsenal returns to the Champions League with a challenging away fixture against Atalanta. Mikel Arteta’s side has been solid in the Premier League and they will want to carry that form into Europe. Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz will lead Arsenal’s attack, aiming to break down Atalanta’s aggressive, high-tempo game.

Atalanta will look to disrupt Arsenal’s rhythm with their intense pressing and attacking style. With players like Ademola Lookman and Mateo Retegui in their ranks, they have the tools to trouble Arsenal’s defense.

Key Players: Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz (Arsenal); Ademola Lookman, Mateo Retegui (Atalanta)

Football’s Greatest Rivalries: Passion, History and Drama

Ahead of today’s North London Derby between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, we delve into some of the world’s most intense football rivalries. These aren’t just games; they are steeped in history, culture and identity. Each of these matchups tells a story of legendary moments and battles won and lost over decades.

  1. El Clásico: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid

El Clásico isn’t just about football—it’s a symbolic clash between two opposing identities. Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia represents the region’s fight for independence from Spain. For decades, the club has been a symbol of resistance against the central government in Madrid. Real Madrid, often associated with Spanish royalty and centralism, has its own history entwined with political power, especially during the Franco regime.

On the field, this rivalry has showcased some of the most legendary players the world has ever seen -Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Alfredo Di Stéfano and Johan Cruyff to name a few. They created moments that will never be forgotten. From Messi’s last-minute winners to Ronaldo’s iconic celebrations at the Camp Nou, El Clásico is football at its most dramatic.

Recent Result: Real Madrid 3-2 Barcelona (April 21, 2024, La Liga)

  1. The Old Firm: Celtic vs. Rangers

The Old Firm Derby is one of the oldest and fiercest rivalries in the world, defined by religious and political divisions that go far beyond football. Celtic is traditionally associated with the Catholic community, while Rangers has deep roots in the Protestant community. These divisions extend to politics and national identity with Celtic often associated with Irish nationalism and Rangers with British unionism.

The intensity of this rivalry is not just felt in the stadium but across Scotland. The matches are known for their electric atmosphere and unfortunately, the bitterness of the rivalry has often spilled over into violence. Despite the dark side, the Old Firm remains a cultural cornerstone in Scottish football. Every match is about more than just three points—it’s about pride, history, and deep-rooted identity.

Recent Result: Celtic 3-0 Rangers (September 1, 2024, Scottish Premiership)

  1. Superclásico: Boca Juniors vs. River Plate

In Buenos Aires, the Superclásico between Boca Juniors and River Plate is a rivalry that splits the city in two. Boca, with its working-class roots is the team of the people, known for its blue-collar grit and passion. River Plate, historically associated with the wealthier, more affluent areas of Buenos Aires, is nicknamed “Los Millonarios,” a symbol of elegance and style.

But this clash is far from elegant. Superclásico matches are raw, emotional and unpredictable. The atmosphere in the stadiums—La Bombonera and El Monumental is electric, with fans known for their massive banners and non-stop singing. Icons like Diego Maradona, Juan Román Riquelme and Enzo Francescoli have made their mark in this legendary fixture. This rivalry defines Argentinian football culture, uniting and dividing fans across the country.

Recent Result: River Plate 2-3 Boca Juniors(April 21, 2024, Copa de la Liga Profesional)

  1. Manchester Derby: Manchester United vs. Manchester City

For much of its history, the Manchester Derby was a tale of one-sided dominance. Manchester United ruled the English football landscape, especially under Sir Alex Ferguson, while Manchester City languished in the shadow of their more illustrious rivals. All that changed in 2008, when City was taken over by Sheikh Mansour, ushering in a new era of success fueled by immense financial power.

Now, the Manchester Derby is about more than local bragging rights—it’s about dominance at the top of English football. City’s rise, marked by Premier League titles and their first-ever Champions League victory in 2023, has made this rivalry fiercer than ever. Iconic moments like Wayne Rooney’s overhead kick and Sergio Agüero’s last-second goal to win City the title in 2012 have transformed this fixture into one of football’s biggest events.

Recent Result: Manchester City 1-1 Manchester United (August 10, 2025, Community Shield—City won on penalties)

  1. Der Klassiker: Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayern Munich

In Germany, Der Klassiker between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich is the pinnacle of domestic football. Bayern Munich has long been the dominant force in the Bundesliga, but Dortmund, with its passionate fanbase and attacking football, remains their fiercest rival. The rivalry really took off in the 1990s when Dortmund emerged as a genuine challenger to Bayern’s supremacy.

In recent years, the rivalry has produced some unforgettable moments, particularly in the 2013 Champions League final, where Bayern defeated Dortmund 2-1 in a dramatic all-German final at Wembley. Players like Robert Lewandowski, who starred for both clubs and Marco Reus have left their mark on these encounters. The passionate support from Dortmund’s famous “Yellow Wall” adds even more drama to this already fiery rivalry.

Recent Result: Bayern Munich 0-2 Borussia Dortmund (March 30, 2024, Bundesliga)

  1. North London Derby: Arsenal vs. Tottenham Hotspur

Today’s North London Derby will once again pit Arsenal and Tottenham against each other in one of the Premier League’s most hotly contested rivalries. The origins of this feud date back to 1913, when Arsenal relocated from South London to Highbury, just four miles from Tottenham’s ground, creating a rivalry that has only grown fiercer with time.

From the battle for Champions League spots to local bragging rights, the North London Derby has delivered some unforgettable moments. Thierry Henry’s knee-slide celebration in front of the Spurs fans after his solo goal in 2002 is etched in Arsenal folklore, while Tottenham’s stunning comeback in 2010—when Gareth Bale announced himself as one of Europe’s finest—remains a Spurs highlight.

With both clubs now regularly battling for European football, today’s encounter promises to be another thrilling chapter in a rivalry that never fails to entertain.

Recent Result: Tottenham Hotspurs 2-3 Arsenal (April 28, 2024, Premier League)

  1. Milan Derby: AC Milan vs. Inter Milan

The Milan Derby or Derby della Madonnina, takes place at the San Siro, a stadium both AC Milan and Inter Milan call home. This shared venue adds a unique intensity to the rivalry. The split between the two clubs occurred in 1908 when disagreements within AC Milan led to the formation of Inter.

Over the decades, this rivalry has seen some of football’s greatest players, from Paolo Maldini to Javier Zanetti, and even Zlatan Ibrahimović, who has played for both sides. The matches are known for their grand tifos, spectacular choreography and the palpable tension between the two sets of fans. Each victory is not just a win on the field, but a symbolic conquest of the city itself.

Recent Result: AC Milan 1-2 Inter Milan (April 22, 2024, Serie A)

  1. Liverpool vs. Manchester United

Liverpool and Manchester United represent the two most successful clubs in English football history. Their rivalry is steeped in regional pride, with Liverpool, historically a bustling port city and Manchester, a center of the Industrial Revolution have always been competitors beyond football.

On the pitch, the two clubs dominated different eras. Liverpool ruled the 1970s and 80s, while Manchester United, under Sir Alex Ferguson, took control in the 1990s and 2000s. Matches between these two giants are always high-stakes, with historic moments like Steven Gerrard’s hat-trick or Eric Cantona’s kung-fu kick adding to the legend of this fixture.

Recent Result: Manchester United 0-3 Liverpool (September 1, 2024, Premier League)

  1. Superclásico Paulista: Corinthians vs. Palmeiras

In São Paulo, the Superclásico Paulista between Corinthians and Palmeiras has divided fans for over a century. The rivalry dates back to 1917 and like Boca Juniors vs. River Plate, it pits working-class Corinthians against Palmeiras, a club founded by Italian immigrants. This derby is as much a cultural clash as it is a footballing battle, with both sides regularly competing for state and national titles.

The passion from the stands and on the field is palpable, with Corinthians’ devoted fans and Palmeiras’ fiercely loyal supporters creating a cauldron-like atmosphere at every meeting.

Recent Result: Palmeiras 2-0 Corinthians (July 2, 2024, Brazilian Série A)

  1. Soweto Derby: Orlando Pirates vs. Kaizer Chiefs

In South Africa, the Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is the most significant fixture on the football calendar. This rivalry isn’t just about football—it’s about identity and pride within the township of Soweto and across South Africa. The rivalry dates back to 1970, when Kaizer Motaung, a former Orlando Pirates player, founded Kaizer Chiefs. The creation of the new club sparked intense competition, fueled by the fact that many Chiefs players had originally played for Pirates.

The encounters between Pirates and Chiefs are unpredictable, often featuring late drama, spectacular goals and controversial moments. Legends like Doctor Khumalo, Jomo Sono, and more recently, players like Khama Billiat and Thembinkosi Lorch, have become heroes in this derby. The passion, the noise and the fierce competition make the Soweto Derby a must-watch event, not just in Africa but across the global football community.

Recent Result: Orlando Pirates 3-2 Kaizer Chiefs (March 9, 2024, Premier Soccer League)

The Ten Hag Dilemma: Is It Time for Manchester United to Move On?

The 3-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday has once again put Erik Ten Hag under pressure. After what has been a rollercoaster tenure, he finds himself fighting to hold on to his position as manager of Manchester United yet again. Ten Hag’s reign has been topsy-turvy, often seeming to swing from one extreme to the other. For many, the latest defeat to Liverpool under their new manager Arne Slot, starkly highlighted the contrasts between the two teams. Liverpool with just three Premier League games under Slot already has a clear identity, while United three years into Ten Hag’s leadership, still seems to lack one —with Sir Alex Ferguson watching it all unfold from the stands.

Where Has It Gone Wrong for Ten Hag?

One glaring issue has been the lack of a defined playing style despite a significant investment in new talent. United has spent a staggering £616 million on transfers during Ten Hag’s tenure, bringing in players he previously worked with at Ajax. However, this familiarity has not translated into league success. Players like Antony and André Onana, who thrived under Ten Hag in Amsterdam have struggled to replicate their form in Manchester. The team’s performance has been erratic and the promise of a coherent style of play similar to the one his Ajax side exhibited remains unfulfilled.

Another significant problem has been United’s tendency to concede cheap goals, particularly late in games. Despite heavy spending on defensive reinforcements including Mathijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte the team has started the season with a negative goal difference. This fragility at the back has cost United dearly, with lapses in concentration leading to unnecessary losses and a lack of confidence among the players.

Persisting Issues with Squad Selection

Ten Hag’s reluctance to drop certain underperforming players has also been a point of contention. Marcus Rashford, for example has consistently failed to meet expectations, yet continues to feature prominently in the starting lineup. Many fans and pundits argue that a more dynamic option like Alejandro Garnacho could offer fresh energy and creativity, yet Garnacho remains on the sidelines more often than not. Similarly, Casemiro once a stalwart in midfield, has appeared out of depth at times. This apparent favoritism has led to frustration among fans, who feel that more deserving players are being overlooked.

Manchester United’s defeat to Liverpool on Sunday was their third such loss at home in the Premier League within a 12-month span, setting a new club record. This statistic alone underscores the difficulties Ten Hag has faced in stabilizing the team. Despite these struggles, Ten Hag has defended his record, noting that no manager apart from Pep Guardiola has won more trophies than him in recent years. However, success in cup competitions has not been enough to mask the deficiencies in league performance.

A Poor Record Against the Reds

The recent loss to Liverpool marked United’s third such home defeat by three goals in just 12 months—a club record no one wanted to see broken. When examining Ten Hag’s performance against Liverpool, the numbers speak volumes. In eight meetings with the Reds, United has only managed to win twice, with their rivals winning five times and one match ending in a draw. The latest head-to-head matchups include:

  • 01.09 Man Utd vs Liverpool 0-3
  • 04.08 Man Utd vs Liverpool 0-3
  • 07.04 Man Utd vs Liverpool 2-2
  • 17.03 Man Utd vs Liverpool 4-3 A.E.T
  • 2023 Liverpool vs Man Utd 0-0
  • 2023 Liverpool vs Man Utd 7-0
  • 2022 Man Utd vs Liverpool 2-1
  • 2022 Man Utd vs Liverpool 0-4

Head-to-head results against Liverpool further illustrate the inconsistency under Ten Hag. This failure to secure victories against their rivals has only added to the pressure on Ten Hag, especially given the high expectations that come with managing Manchester United.

The team’s struggles have not been limited to domestic competitions either. Last season, United failed to advance past the group stage of the Champions League, finishing behind Copenhagen, Galatasaray and Bayern Munich. This early exit was a significant blow and raised further questions about Ten Hag’s ability to succeed at the highest level.

Rumors of Ten Hag being sacked in the summer, even after an FA Cup final win against Manchester City underscore the precarious nature of his position. While he has shown glimpses of what he can achieve, there remains a lingering doubt over whether he is the right man to lead United back to the top.

Looking Ahead

The coming months will be critical for Erik Ten Hag. With Manchester United languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League after two defeats in their opening three matches, there is no room for complacency. If Ten Hag is to save his job, he must find a way to instill a clear identity in his team, tighten up the defense and make bold decisions regarding his squad selection. The clock is ticking, and as Gary Neville pointed out, the pressure is only going to build from here. If Ten Hag fails to turn things around by Christmas, he may find himself out of a job.

Pre-Match Analysis: Juventus vs A.S Roma – Italian Serie A Encounter

Match Overview: Juventus enters this clash on the back of two impressive 3-0 wins this season. They remain the only Serie A side with a perfect record so far. Thiago Motta’s men are full of confidence and rejuvenated, with high enthusiasm for the season, especially with the recent additions of Teun Koopmeiners and Nico Gonzalez.

Roma, on the other hand, have had an uninspiring start to the campaign. It has become somewhat customary for Roma to struggle in their opening games, failing to win any of their first two matches in four out of the last six seasons. This season, they have yet to secure a win in their opening fixtures and after losing to Empoli last weekend. They are currently sitting in 15th place on the table.

Recent Form: A.S. Roma will be eager to get their season up and running amidst their torrid start. They drew their first game 0-0 against Cagliari and lost 2-1 to Empoli in their last outing. Daniele De Rossi, who took the job permanently this season, will be keen to impress the fans after having steadied the ship at the tail end of last season. Meanwhile, Juventus have started the season in brilliant fashion, winning both games 3-0. Thiago Motta’s side has conceded the fewest shots on goal across all top-five European leagues. Early-season form suggests they could be the biggest rivals to Inter Milan’s crown.

Head-to-Head Record: Juventus and A.S. Roma have played 180 matches to date. Juventus have 86 wins, 42 defeats, and 52 draws. Notably, Roma have lost 11 of their last 13 away games against Juventus in Serie A, conceding goals in each of their last 21 encounters.

Date Juventus A.S Roma
2024 1 1
2023 1 0
2023 0 1
2022 1 1
2022 4 3
2021 1 0
2021 2 0
2020 2 2
2020 1 3
2020 3 1

The results from their last 10 games show that the tie is usually a close encounter, with the last four games featuring less than three goals.

What to Expect from Both Sides:

Juventus: After an impressive start to the 2024/25 Serie A season with back-to-back 3-0 victories, Juventus are keen to head into the international break with a perfect record. Under new coach Thiago Motta, their high-pressing style has yielded immediate results, and the team’s strong performances suggest they could be serious contenders for the Scudetto.

The Bianconeri’s attack will be spearheaded by Dusan Vlahovic, who has already netted two goals this season and is currently Serie A’s top scorer in 2024. Supporting him will be new additions Teun Koopmeiners and Nico González. Defensively, Gleison Bremer will be charged with organizing the backline especially against Roma’s attacking threats. Juventus will likely adopt a high-tempo approach while aiming to dominate possession and exploit Roma’s defensive vulnerabilities.

Roma: The Giallorossi have historically struggled at the Allianz Stadium, losing 13 of their 15 matches since its inauguration, which adds pressure on De Rossi to break this negative streak.

Roma’s attacking hopes rest heavily on Paulo Dybala, who recently pledged his loyalty to the club amidst transfer speculation. Dybala, alongside new recruit Artem Dovbyk, will be key in penetrating Juventus’s defense. The midfield led by the experienced Bryan Cristante and Leandro Paredes, will need to control the tempo and provide the necessary support to their forwards. Defensively, Roma will need to tighten up, especially considering their poor away record against Juventus. Gianluca Mancini and Evan Ndicka will be pivotal in marshaling the backline and preventing Juventus from finding their rhythm.

Both teams have a lot to prove in this early-season clash, with Juventus looking to maintain their unbeaten run and Roma aiming to bounce back from a shaky start. It promises to be an intense and closely contested match at the Allianz Stadium.

Key Battles to Watch:

  1. Dusan Vlahovic vs. Evan Ndicka: Vlahovic will aim to use his physical presence and goal-scoring ability to challenge Roma’s defense. Ndicka will use his strength and defensive awareness to his advantage. He will play a crucial role in containing Vlahovic and prevent him from finding space in the penalty area.
  2. Nicolas Fagioli vs. Leandro Paredes: This midfield battle could be decisive in controlling the game’s tempo. Fagioli will look to dictate play and distribute the ball effectively for Juventus, while Paredes, a tenacious midfielder, will focus on breaking up Juventus’ attacks and setting up Roma’s offensive plays.
  3. Paulo Dybala vs. Manuel Locatelli: Dybala, operating in an attacking midfield role for Roma, will be pivotal in creating chances and linking up play. His creativity and ability to find pockets of space will challenge Locatelli, who will need to be vigilant in his defensive duties, intercepting passes and closing down Dybala to prevent him from orchestrating Roma’s attacks.
  4. Artem Dovbyk vs. Bremer: Dovbyk, as Roma’s center forward, will look to use his strength and aerial ability to unsettle the Juventus defense. Bremer, a strong and disciplined defender, will have the task of marking Dovbyk closely, winning aerial duels and limit the striker’s impact in the final third. This physical battle could be crucial in determining Roma’s ability to penetrate Juventus’s defensive line.

Conclusion:

Heading into this clash, both teams have had contrasting starts to the season. Juventus has shown a solid form, making the most of their opportunities early on. Meanwhile, Roma has historically struggled in away fixtures against Juventus. With Roma’s poor away form in recent meetings between these two sides, Juventus is tipped to have the edge in what is expected to be a tense encounter. The home advantage and strong start to the season could see Juventus narrowly come out on top in this match.

Premier League 2024/25: Predictions, Insights and What to Expect

Finally! The English Premier League is back! Oh, how much I’ve missed it! But don’t get me wrong—the Euros, Copa America, and the Olympics were fantastic alternatives. Still, there’s something about club football’s weekly drama, derbies and star-studded line-ups that international tournaments just can’t quite match. The stage is set for another unforgettable season. If you’re as enthusiastic as I am, the wait is finally over. Without further ado, here are some predictions and insights on the 20 teams competing in this year’s Premier League, the world’s most-watched league.

  1. Arsenal

The Gunners have started the season strong, with a 2-0 victory and a clean sheet. Arteta’s boys will definitely be hoping that the third time is the charm this time around. Kai Havertz has shown he can lead the line for a title charge and the ever-brilliant Saka is just as pivotal. But I can’t help but see the Gunners finishing as runners-up to Man City for the third time. While Calafiori is a great signing, Arsenal hasn’t really addressed a key area of their squad that needs reinforcement: the attack. They had the second-most potent attack last season, but they still need a 20-goal-a-season striker. Havertz may reach that tally this season, who knows? But if he or Saka gets injured, then they are left exposed in attack. Gabriel Jesus is injury-prone and you wouldn’t expect double-digit goals from him. The transfer window is still open; if Arsenal secures another striker or winger to cover for Saka, then this could be their year.

   – Key Player: Bukayo Saka

   – Notable Signings: Riccardo Calafiori, David Raya

   – Manager: Mikel Arteta

   – Prediction: 2nd

  1. Aston Villa

Villa had a fantastic campaign last time out and I doubt anyone saw them finishing 4th! Kudos to Emery; he has transformed Villa from a mid-table club into a Champions League team. They have also made some great signings, such as Amadou Onana, who scored within 4 minutes of his debut. They also brought in Ross Barkley, Ian Maatsen and managed to keep Ollie Watkins. Their season started off well with a 2-1 win away at West Ham—a very fine result. I’m only dropping them lower this season because I believe Champions League football will put additional strain on Emery’s squad. We’ve seen it many times before: a team not used to Champions League football often falters the following season (e.g., Newcastle). Because of this, I predict a drop from the top four and a 6th-place finish for them.

   – Key Player: Ollie Watkins

   – Notable Signings: Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen

   – Manager: Unai Emery

   – Prediction: 6th

  1. Bournemouth

Losing Dominic Solanke, who scored 19 goals last season, is a huge blow and it remains to be seen how the Cherries will cope without him. In Antoine Semenyo and Luis Sinisterra, they have fantastic players who, on their day, can change the course of a game. But the impact of Solanke’s loss will definitely be felt. The 1-1 draw in their opening fixture against Nottingham Forest sums up my expectations for them this season. However, Andoni Iraola is a fantastic manager and his tactics and ability will be crucial for them this season. They should do enough to avoid relegation, but anything higher than 14th or 15th would be asking too much from the Cherries.

   – Key Player: Antoine Semenyo

   – Notable Signings: Julian Araujo, Luis Sinisterra

   – Manager: Andoni Iraola

   – Prediction: 16th

  1. Brentford

With Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, the Bees are blessed with talented players who on their day, can give any team in the league a run for their money. The expected exit of Ivan Toney hasn’t dampened the atmosphere at the Brentford Community Stadium. Thomas Frank took Toney out of the lineup amidst speculation about his future and they still won their season opener 2-1 against Crystal Palace, who finished last season strongly. One downside is the injury to Toney’s replacement, Igor Thiago, whom the Bees signed from Club Bruges. He has been ruled out until near the end of the year due to a knee injury sustained in a friendly against AFC Wimbledon. In Fabio Carvalho, they have a fantastic midfielder signed from Liverpool. Thomas Frank has a very talented squad and my expectation for them this season is a 14th-place finish, which is two places higher than last season.

   – Key Player: Bryan Mbeumo

   – Notable Signings: Fabio Carvalho, Igor Thiago

   – Manager: Thomas Frank

   – Prediction: 14th

  1. Brighton & Hove Albion

The Seagulls have the Premier League’s youngest-ever permanent manager in 31 year-old Fabian Hürzeler, who led St. Pauli into the Bundesliga. It remains to be seen how Hürzeler will fare in the Premier League, especially after replacing the charismatic Roberto De Zerbi. However, they started the season strongly with a 3-0 thumping of Everton, albeit the Toffees were a man down. Pascal Gross was a big loss, but new signings Mats Wieffer and Yankuba Minteh have both settled in nicely, with each grabbing an assist in the first game of the season. Their league position depends largely on the performances of Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson, Joao Pedro, Simon Adingra, and Danny Welbeck.  A top-half finish or 11th place should be expected.

   – Key Player: Kaoru Mitoma

   – Notable Signings: Mats Wieffer, Yankuba Minteh

   – Manager: Fabian Hürzeler

   – Prediction: 11th

  1. Chelsea

With an overly bloated squad, the Blues still seem far off from their rivals Arsenal and Manchester City. A poor showing against the champions, Manchester City, with a 2-0 loss at Stamford Bridge where they conceded two sloppy goals, shows that Enzo Maresca has his work cut out for him. There is also an evident lack of leadership, especially in defence and with Reece James’ constant injuries, it doesn’t help matters. Despite over £300 million invested in midfield, Chelsea still lacks steel in that position. They also need a clinical striker—if they get Victor Osimhen, maybe their season could look a lot different. Nevertheless, with Cole Palmer, who they heavily relied on last season, they have one of the Premier League’s finest attackers. If players like Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto, and Romeo Lavia can perform to their abilities, Blues fans will be up for some delightful football at Stamford Bridge. The jury is still out on key players like Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo.

– Key Player: Cole Palmer

– Notable Signings: Pedro Neto, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

– Manager: Enzo Maresca

– Prediction: 7th

  1. Crystal Palace

In stark contrast to how Palace ended last season, they were unbeaten in their last seven games but endured an opening-day defeat to Brentford, losing 2-1 away. Manager Oliver Glasner is a fine coach and after taking the Palace job midway through last season, he orchestrated one of the finest attacks of the season with a trident of Eberechi Eze, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Michael Olise; they felt unplayable at times. The loss of Olise to Bayern Munich is a big blow, no doubt. It remains to be seen if Daichi Kamada can step up and be an adequate replacement. They also have the bright youngster Adam Wharton and new signing Ismaila Sarr. I wouldn’t read too much into the opening-day defeat, as a top-half finish should still be expected.

– Key Player: Eberechi Eze

– Notable Signings: Ismaila Sarr, Daichi Kamada

– Manager: Oliver Glasner

– Prediction: 10th

  1. Everton

How not to start a new season! The Toffees were battered by Brighton and had a player sent off in their opening fixture. A 3-0 opening-day loss will dampen the enthusiasm for the new season among the fans, but if anyone can overcome obstacles, it’s their manager Sean Dyche. He performed miracles last season. Not many teams with points deducted can escape relegation, but they did it. This season, there’s another points deduction looming over them and Dyche has his work cut out again. Adding to that is the huge loss of Andre Onana to Aston Villa. However, the signings of Iliman Ndiaye and Jesper Lindström should lift the mood at Goodison Park, but fans shouldn’t expect more than a 13th-place finish, especially if their profligacy in front of goal continues.

– Key Player: Dominic Calvert-Lewin

– Notable Signings: Iliman Ndiaye, Jesper Lindström

– Manager: Sean Dyche

– Prediction: 13th

  1. Fulham

They started the season with a strong performance but ultimately lost in the end. Losing 1-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford isn’t the worst outcome. However, if they are going to turn good performances into points, they need to become more clinical and decisive in the final third, especially players like Adama Traoré and Andreas Pereira, who were guilty of some sloppy final touches in the game. Key losses like João Palhinha to Bayern Munich, Tosin Adarabioyo to Chelsea and Tim Ream to Charlotte FC might affect their season, but I still expect them to finish a place higher than last season. Emile Smith Rowe’s addition is fantastic and with him pulling the strings behind Rodrigo Muniz, Marco Silva has a very good core of players capable of finishing the season in 12th or 13th.

– Key Player: Rodrigo Muniz

– Notable Signings: Ryan Sessegnon, Emile Smith Rowe

– Manager: Marco Silva

– Prediction: 12th

  1. Ipswich Town

In Kieran McKenna, Ipswich have one of the brightest young managers in football. The fact that he was heavily courted by Chelsea and Manchester United to replace their managers in the summer is a testament to his brilliance. Playing an exciting brand of football, many people are going to enjoy watching Ipswich play. If he can manage to keep the Tractor Boys up in the Premier League, it would be even more remarkable than his feat of achieving back-to-back promotions from League One to the Championship and then to the Premier League.

However, the Premier League is ruthless and despite a brilliant performance against Liverpool in their opening-day fixture, they ultimately lost the tie 2-0. As with other promoted teams, the financial gap between the established Premier League sides and the promoted teams is massive. A return to the Championship seems inevitable.

– Key Player: Sam Morsy

– Notable Signings: Kalvin Phillips, Sam Szmodics

– Manager: Kieran McKenna

– Prediction: 18th

  1. Leicester City

It feels like an eternity since Leicester pulled off one of the greatest miracles in football by winning the league in 2016. With Jamie Vardy, Conor Coady and Harry Winks, they still have a core of players with lots of experience in the Premier League. However, the losses of head coach Enzo Maresca and Player of the Season Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, both to Chelsea, raise doubts about their season. Both were instrumental in Leicester’s return to the Premier League after a season in the second division. The Foxes were able to get Facundo Buonanotte on loan from Brighton and the Ghanaian forward Abdul Fatawu, who they signed permanently from Sporting CP. Can Steve Cooper avoid relegation with the Foxes? I seriously doubt it. One thing is certain: the fans will be grateful for the return of Premier League football to the King Power Stadium, for now.

– Key Player: Jamie Vardy

– Notable Signings: Facundo Buonanotte, Abdul Fatawu

– Manager: Steve Cooper

– Prediction: 19th

  1. Liverpool

Life post-Klopp is going better than expected for the Reds. Many predicted a shaky season after so many years under the enigmatic Jürgen Klopp. Would you blame them? Klopp proved to be one of the greatest managers English football has ever seen, so replacing him was never going to be easy. But if preseason results and the opening day 2-0 victory against Ipswich are anything to go by, Liverpool might have found a gem in Arne Slot. The ex-Feyenoord manager has got Liverpool playing an exciting brand of football and they look formidable this season. One concern for fans is that Liverpool failed to sign any players in this transfer window, with Martin Zubimendi’s preference for staying with Real Sociedad being an additional blow. But with Mo Salah looking as hungry as ever, continuing his streak of never having failed to score or assist on the opening weekend of a Premier League season and with captain Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool have a core of players to win any tie. Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta should keep a watchful eye on them.

– Key Player: Mohamed Salah

– Notable Signings: None

– Manager: Arne Slot

– Prediction: 3rd

  1. Manchester City

Arguably the best team in the world, what more can I say about the juggernaut Pep Guardiola has built? The Citizens have come a long way from being noisy neighbors to dominating the domestic scene. In Pep Guardiola, they have one of football’s greatest coaches, which makes them the team to beat every season. They started the season by easily defeating Chelsea 2-0 away in a game that felt a lot like a preseason friendly for Pep’s team. Pep is relentless and a serial winner who wants to keep winning. His main challengers for the crown will be Arsenal and possibly Liverpool. A quiet transfer window, with only the addition of Savinho from Girona, is unusual for the Citizens. With about two weeks left until the close of the transfer window, I expect some activity, especially after the sale of Julián Álvarez to Atlético Madrid and the loss of Oscar Bobb to injury, meaning they are light in the striker position. But despite the quiet window, they are still a world-class team with a core of Haaland, Ederson, Kyle Walker, Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden. They are still the team to beat. I’m fully backing Pep and his team to break more records and become the first English team to win the league title five times consecutively.

– Key Player: Erling Haaland

– Notable Signings: Savinho

– Manager:  Pep Guardiola

– Prediction: 1st

  1. Manchester United

The FA Cup winners started the season with a 1-0 win against Fulham in the curtain raiser of the season, a good result, but at times it felt like the ghosts of last season were still hovering around for much of the match. However, a moment of brilliance by new signing Joshua Zirkzee changed the game in their favor and oh boy! what a fantastic signing he looks to be. Erik ten Hag, in his third season, will be hoping for a top-four challenge and will be counting on players like Rashford, Mount, Højlund, Sancho, and Antony to seriously step up this season. Also, major surgery has been done to the defense, which leaked many goals last season and ended the season with a negative goal difference. The additions of Leny Yoro from Lille, who is expected to be out for two months, Matthijs de Ligt and Matarouzzi from Bayern Munich will bolster the defense. Red Devils fans can expect the team to concede fewer goals and keep more clean sheets this campaign. There are also talks about signing Manuel Ugarte from PSG and all in all, Manchester United have done good business in the transfer window. I expect them to climb three places higher than their 8th-place finish last season.

– Key Player: Bruno Fernandes

– Notable Signings: Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro

– Manager: Erik ten Hag

– Prediction: 5th

  1. Newcastle United

There’s a lot of unpredictability surrounding the Magpies heading into the new season. They nearly lost one of their best players, Anthony Gordon, to Liverpool due to Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR)and they eventually had to sell Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton to make some signings. They started the season well with a 1-0 win over Southampton despite going a man down in the 28th minute. They also have a brilliant striker in Alexander Isak and with a supporting cast of Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimarães, a top-eight finish is well within reach. However, a lot will depend on whether Eddie Howe remains their manager amid interest in him for the vacant England managerial role.

– Key Player: Alexander Isak

– Notable Signings: William Osula, Lewis Hall

– Manager: Eddie Howe

– Prediction: 8th

  1. Nottingham Forest

Another season battling for relegation survival might be on the horizon. However, Nuno Espírito Santo has a solid core in Brazilian defender Murillo, Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White. Holding on to Gibbs-White for another season will be instrumental in retaining their Premier League status. The Englishman has been at the center of everything good on the pitch for the club. They started the season with a 1-1 draw at home against Bournemouth, but they lost Brazilian midfielder Danilo in the 15th minute to a horrific leg injury. Nuno and Forest fans will be hoping he doesn’t stay out too long, but from the look of it, a lengthy spell on the sidelines seems the most probable outcome. This injury blow will surely dampen spirits in the dressing room. However, if players like Anthony Elanga, Hudson-Odoi, Awoniyi and Neco Williams can step up, they can certainly stay up this season.

– Key Player: Murillo

– Notable Signings: Jota Silva, Marko Stamenic

– Manager: Nuno Espírito Santo

– Prediction: 17th

  1. Southampton

The Saints regained Premier League status by beating Leeds United in the playoff final. In Russell Martin, they have one of the finest young managers in English football. They play a very expressive brand of football, but it remains to be seen if it will work out well for them in the Premier League. If their opening day result is anything to go by, failing to score with a man advantage against Newcastle sums up my expectations of them this season. They have managed to get Lesley Ugochukwu, a combative defensive midfielder, on loan from Chelsea, as well as Ben Brereton Díaz. Expectations should be low at St. Mary’s and I fancy them for the drop this season.

– Key Player: Adam Armstrong

– Notable Signings: Lesley Ugochukwu, Ben Brereton Díaz

– Manager: Russell Martin

– Prediction: 20th

  1. Tottenham Hotspur

What Ange Postecoglou did last season isn’t talked about enough. He lost Harry Kane, who was the club’s talisman and one of the greatest strikers in football, to Bayern Munich and wasn’t given adequate cover. He had to rely on Timo Werner and Richarlison for goals. His Spurs team came within two points of Champions League qualification, largely thanks to the ever-reliable Son Heung-min. In fact, if their end-of-season results had been better, they would have nicked the fourth spot from Aston Villa! This season, they have signed an adequate replacement for Harry Kane. Although not as lethal as Kane, if Dominic Solanke hits the heights of last season, there’s no stopping him from scoring 20 goals. Watch out for our rising star from last week, Mikey Moore, who is being tipped to become a superstar.

– Key Player: Son Heung-min

– Notable Signings: Dominic Solanke, Wilson Odobert

– Manager: Ange Postecoglou

– Prediction: 4th

  1. West Ham United

With a new manager at the helm, it remains to be seen if Julen Lopetegui can achieve the heights David Moyes reached with the Hammers. The ex-Wolves manager has certainly been backed in the transfer window this summer. West Ham has conducted some of the best business in the market, bringing in Niclas Füllkrug, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Crysencio Summerville, Max Kilman, and Jean-Clair Todibo. Adding these players to an already impressive core of Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus, and Lucas Paquetá, a top-10 finish is certainly on the cards for them again despite their opening day 2-1 loss to Aston Villa. But can they move a place or two higher than the 9th position they finished last season? It remains to be seen.

– Key Player: Jarrod Bowen

– Notable Signings: Niclas Füllkrug, Jean-Clair Todibo

– Manager: Julen Lopetegui

– Prediction: 9th

  1. Wolverhampton Wanderers

In Gary O’Neil, Wolves have a fantastic manager and much of how their season plays out will depend on his brilliance. The opening day 2-0 loss to Arsenal shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone because they played one of the best teams in the league. However, a concern is the quiet transfer window and the huge losses of key players Max Kilman and Pedro Neto to West Ham and Chelsea, respectively. On the other hand, Tommy Doyle made his move permanent from Manchester City. My prediction this season is that fans at Molineux Stadium should expect some fine performances and their team should steer clear of relegation.

– Key Player: Matheus Cunha

– Notable Signings: Pedro Lima, Tommy Doyle

– Head Coach: Gary O’Neil

– Prediction: 15th

As of the time of writing, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City have yet to play their opening game of the season.

La Liga Clash: RCD Mallorca vs Real Madrid

A Battle for Early Dominance

The stage is set for an enthralling La Liga opener as Real Madrid travels to face Mallorca at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix on Sunday, August 18th, at 20:00 GMT. Fresh from their UEFA Super Cup triumph, Los Blancos are eager to kick off their domestic campaign with a victory, while Mallorca seeks to build on a promising pre-season under new management.

Team Form and Recent Performance

Mallorca: After finishing 15th last season, Mallorca enters the new campaign with renewed hopes under new manager Jagoba Arrasate. Their pre-season form was strong, with six wins out of seven matches, but maintaining that momentum against a team like Real Madrid will be a herculean task. The departure of key players like Predrag Rajkovic and a change in management adds an element of unpredictability to their campaign.

Real Madrid: The reigning Spanish and European champions have continued their dominance under Carlo Ancelotti. Fresh off a 2-0 victory over Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup, Madrid looks set to continue their success. Although their pre-season was mixed, the addition of Kylian Mbappé and the impressive form of Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior have only strengthened their squad.

Head-to-Head Records

Real Madrid and Mallorca have faced each other numerous times, with Madrid dominating the fixture in recent years.

            •          Recent Encounters: In their last five meetings, Real Madrid has won four times, with Mallorca managing just one victory—a 1-0 win at home in February 2023. The last encounter saw Madrid claim a narrow 1-0 victory in April 2024.

Team News and Lineups

Mallorca: Mallorca will be missing Javi Llabres due to a muscle injury, but they are otherwise in good shape. The new manager is likely to field a three-man defense, with new signings Johan Mojica and Takuma Asano expected to start.

Real Madrid: Madrid will be without David Alaba due to a knee injury and Eduardo Camavinga, who is sidelined for six weeks with a knee issue. Ancelotti is likely to stick with the same lineup that triumphed over Atalanta, featuring a fearsome attacking trio of Vinicius Junior, Mbappé, and Rodrygo.

Key Players to Watch

Mallorca:

            •          Sergi Darder: The midfielder has a knack for scoring crucial goals, often late in the game and will be pivotal in trying to break down Madrid’s defense.

Real Madrid:

            •          Kylian Mbappé: The French forward made an immediate impact in the UEFA Super Cup and will be eager to make his mark in La Liga.

            •          Jude Bellingham: The young Englishman continues to impress in midfield, showcasing his versatility and ability to contribute both defensively and offensively.

Tactical Overview

Mallorca: Expect Mallorca to adopt a cautious approach, focusing on defensive solidity while looking to exploit any opportunities on the counter. The physicality and discipline of their midfield will be key to their strategy.

Real Madrid: Madrid will likely dominate possession, with quick transitions and lethal finishing in the final third. Ancelotti’s side will aim to control the tempo from the outset, using their superior technical ability to break down Mallorca’s defense.

Manager’s Tactics and Strategy

Jagoba Arrasate is expected to emphasize discipline and compactness in defense, with an eye on frustrating Real Madrid and capitalizing on set-piece opportunities.

Carlo Ancelotti, on the other hand, will look to maintain Madrid’s aggressive, attacking style, leveraging the pace and creativity of his front line to overwhelm Mallorca.

Match Conditions

The Estadi Mallorca Son Moix offers a challenging environment for visiting teams, and the home crowd will be in full voice for this high-stakes opener. The warm summer evening might also play a role in the game’s pace, potentially favoring the team that can maintain high energy levels.

Predictions and Expectations

Real Madrid enters this match as clear favorites, given their superior squad and recent form. However, Mallorca’s strong pre-season and home advantage could make this a closer contest than expected. While Madrid should have the quality to secure a win, Mallorca will aim to keep the scoreline respectable.

Prediction: Mallorca 0-2 Real Madrid
