From stunning comebacks to title-race heartbreak, this weekend delivered the full footballing soap opera of goals, controversy and a bit of VAR-induced fury. Manchester United avoided disaster at Goodison Park, Arsenal stumbled at home and Liverpool made a massive statement at the Etihad. Meanwhile, Aston Villa’s new dynamic duo gave Chelsea yet another away-day headache.
Here’s a full rundown of the weekend’s best and worst moments!
Goodison Park Thriller: Bruno’s Magic Saves United from Meltdown
Everton 2-2 Manchester United
For 70 minutes, Manchester United looked lifeless. Then, in the blink of an eye, they woke up and snatched a point from what seemed like certain defeat at Goodison Park.
Everton were flying early on, with Beto and Abdoulaye Doucouré bullying United’s defense. Beto’s acrobatic finish and Doucouré’s header put the Toffees in cruise control, while United’s attack looked as threatening as a deflated balloon.
But just when things seemed hopeless, Alejandro Garnacho won a free-kick and up stepped Bruno Fernandes. He wrong-footed Jordan Pickford and sparked life into United. Minutes later, chaos from another set-piece allowed Manuel Ugarte to hammer in an equalizer and suddenly, the comeback was complete.
There was late drama when Everton had a penalty overturned by VAR, much to the fury of David Moyes and the Goodison crowd. While the Toffees remain unbeaten under their old boss, United will take heart from their spirited fightback.
Hammer Blow: Bowen’s Arrow Pierces Arsenal’s Title Hopes
Arsenal 0-1 West Ham
Mikel Arteta’s men had dreams of closing the gap on Liverpool. Instead, they ran into a West Ham side that decided to play the role of party crashers at the Emirates, leaving Arsenal fans wondering if this was the moment their title race ended.
Arsenal’s attack was struggling to break through a disciplined West Ham defense. The only real moment of excitement in the first half? Ricardo Calafiori’s tame shot straight at Alphonse Areola.
Then, just before halftime, the Hammers struck. Aaron Wan-Bissaka sent in a perfect cross that Jarrod Bowen buried with a diving header.
Things went from bad to worse for Arsenal when young Myles Lewis-Skelly saw red after a VAR review for a reckless challenge on Mohammed Kudus. Down to ten men, the Gunners huffed and puffed but never truly threatened an equalizer.
With Liverpool pulling away at the top, Arsenal’s title dreams are now hanging by a thread. Arteta will need a miracle or at least some better finishing, if they are to stay in the race.
Villa Park Delight: Asensio and Rashford Sink Chelsea
Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea
Chelsea’s away form has been worse recently and that trend continued as Aston Villa came from behind to snatch all three points at Villa Park.
Things started well for the Blues, with Pedro Neto setting up Enzo Fernández for a tap-in. But Villa never panicked and Marco Asensio, with the instincts of a fox in the box, was on hand to finish a slick move and bring the hosts level.
Villa smelt blood, and in the dying minutes, Rashford and Asensio combined again. A well-worked corner saw the Spaniard squeeze the ball past Jörgensen to send the home fans into raptures.
Unai Emery’s side finally ended their winless streak, while Chelsea’s search for a resurgence continues. Mauricio Pochettino must be wondering if his side has an allergy to holding on to leads.
Como’s Wild Ride: Diao’s Strike Stuns Napoli
Como 2-1 Napoli
Napoli had a golden chance to reclaim top spot in Serie A, but instead, they turned up to Como and left with nothing but frustration and regret.
The chaos started early when Amir Rrahmani’s misjudged back pass somehow found its way into his own net. Napoli did respond, with Giacomo Raspadori pouncing on a defensive error to bring them level.
But Como had other ideas. With 15 minutes to go, Assane Diao finished off a lethal counter-attack, sending the home fans into delirium. Napoli huffed and puffed but couldn’t find an equalizer, leaving Antonio Conte fuming on the touchline.
While Napoli now trail Inter in the title race, Como are suddenly looking up the table rather than over their shoulders. Not bad for a team that was playing in Serie B last season.
Reds Take Charge: Liverpool Silence the Etihad
Manchester City 0-2 Liverpool
Arne Slot’s Liverpool came to the Etihad and left with three points, a clean sheet and an 11-point lead in the title race. Not a bad day at the office.
City fans had barely settled into their seats when Mohamed Salah pounced on a Dominik Szoboszlai flick to give Liverpool the lead. Pep Guardiola’s men tried to respond, but their attacks lacked sharpness and Omar Marmoush saw a goal ruled out for offside.
Liverpool struck again before halftime. Salah turned provider, setting up Szoboszlai to double the lead with a composed finish.
Liverpool defended resolutely and when they did attack, they looked more likely to add a third than concede. By full-time, the only noise in the Etihad came from the away end.
With this result, City’s top four hopes now hang by a thread. Liverpool on the other hand, are firmly in the driver’s seat of the title race. The way things are going, the Premier League trophy might need a quick trip to Anfield sooner rather than later.
