His exceptional talent was evident even at that age and he continued his development at the academies of Emelec and Patria before finally joining Independiente’s youth team in 2018 at age 12.
He made his professional debut for Independiente on February 25, 2021 at just 15 years old and scored on his debut in a 3-1 win against Ecuadorian side Mushuc Runa, becoming the youngest goal scorer in the Ecuadorian league. Paez continued to develop his skills and build his reputation as one of South America’s most exciting young attacking midfielders, attracting interest from the biggest clubs in Europe before eventually penning a £17.5 million deal with the English club Chelsea.
Paez made his senior international debut on September 12, 2023 in a 2-1 win over Uruguay in a World Cup Qualifier, becoming the youngest player to represent Ecuador at the senior level.
